Salsa Goes Country?

There’s been a move in the last couple of years to create Crossover Salsa in English. I have to say that the choices producers have made are pretty stale. Artists like Michael Jackson and The Beatles have been beaten to death in trying to get a hit piggybacking on their hits. For me, the true tie between Salsa and American music lies in country music. Our music came from “El Campo” to begin with if you look at Cuban Son and Puerto Rican guaracha. Orestes Vilato has shared with me that he has added percussion to Country Bands. I too have gone down that path and found it rewarding. There’s two American Artists who deserve to be covered by Salsa Bands and I believe they will get a crossover hit. Roy Orbison’s songs are ripe for the picking. Then there’s Patsy Cline. I’d like to hear a Salsera take on Cline’s cadences and phrasing with a Salsa Swing. When I lived in Tucson Arizona in the 90’s I split my time playing timbales with a variety of Southwest Salsa-Latin Jazz bands and Dancing in Country palaces. Western couple dancing is a form of social dance. Many different dances are done to country-western music. These dances include: Two Step, Waltz, Cowboy or Traveling Cha Cha, Polka, Ten Step (also known as Ten Step Polka), Schottische, and other Western promenade dances, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, and Nightclub Two Step. The Two Step and various Western promenade or pattern couples dances are unique to country western dancing. Take a listen to Patsy Cline in this special mix and I’ll you be the judge of my observations. There’s a number of tunes where she uses Latin Percussion to spice up the arrangements.

As I stated earlier in the post about Patsy Cline, Salsa and Country Swing dancing have a lot in common. Here I give an example singing the Country Western tune “Seven Lonely Days” featuring a Swing Country Couple dancing. Notice the great similarity in turns and moves. “Seven Lonely Days,” is a song written by Earl Shuman, Alden Shuman, and Marshall Brown. It was originally recorded by American country music and rock and roll singer Bonnie Lou. It was first included on her 1958 album, Bonnie Lou Sings and peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Magazine Most Played C&W in Juke Boxes chart. Several covers exist, including a Disco one by Sheila & B.Devotion released in 1979.
